Day 8 NO EXIT

"You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the Twilight Zone!"
Do Now: Please take out the packet from Friday. Finish your claim about character and write one about symbolism.

Today's Learning Target:

I will be able to compare and contrast No Exit with "Five Characters in Search of an Exit" and use the two texts to draw a conclusion about a big idea.
I will know that I have hit the learning target when...
-I can list similarities and differences between the two texts.
-I can make an inference about what the two texts suggest about a big idea.

Agenda:

  1. "Five Characters in Search of an Exit"
  2. Making Connections
  3. No Exit Ticket: The two texts make me think about...

HW: Continue looking for secondary sources.

Day 7 NO EXIT

Do Now: If Garcin, Inez, and Estelle could leave the room in No Exit, what do you think they would do?

Today's Learning Target:
I will be able to explain how Sartre uses the characters Garcin, Inez, and Estelle to illustrate the stark consequences of leading a life that avoids responsibility and denies other existentialist principles (i.e., bad faith or existence precedes essence).
I will know that I have hit the learning target when...
-I can point to evidence in the play that suggests Garcin, Inez, or Estelle provides a cautionary tale of living without accepting responsibility for one's choices.

Agenda:
  1. Where to?
  2. Finishing the play
  3. Looking at the evidence
  4. No exit ticket: Of the three main characters in No Exit, who needs the most "help" to get out of hell? Explain why you've chosen this character and what sort of help he/she needs to improve.

HW:  Begin searching for more secondary sources. They needn't address just one of your primary sources.

Day 6 NO EXIT

"You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave."
Do Now: Existentialism in popular song (Pink Floyd's "Time," Bob Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone," Joni Mitchell's "Black Crow," The Eagles' "Hotel California," The The's "This is the Day," The Beatles' "Nowhere Man," etc.)

Using one of the suggested songs (or one that you select), consider a connection it has to existentialism or No Exit.

Today's Learning Target:
I will be able to explore the setting and the symbols in the play and connect Sartre's choices to existentialist ideas (the absurd, existence precedes essence, choice, responsibility, etc.).
I will know that I have hit the learning target when...
-I can describe important features of the setting and the objects used as symbols.
-I can explain how at least one of the symbols or elements of the setting connects to an existentialist idea.

Agenda:
  1. Existentialism in Popular Song
  2. Setting and Symbolism in No Exit
  3. Continuing the play
  4. No exit ticket: Which existentialist concept is most clearly addressed in the play so far? How so?

HW:  Begin searching for more secondary sources. They needn't address just one of your primary sources.
